I just wanted to say a big thank you to Alun Williams and the gang who made the trip to provide an excellent day’s training on Sunday. These guys are obviously passionate about training their art and sharing it. They really went out of their way here to help us all. I must give a shout to Mark here for his patience and help during the afternoon. As someone who is fairly new to self protection training all this made for a good learning environment.
Alun prepared a set of illustrated notes for each attendee which was a helpful means of setting out a structure for the day. I’ve never seen this before at a seminar but it was a great idea and will help make sure the material sticks going forward.
After a quick warm up we got straight down to some techniques. If you’ve seen the DVD or the clips on youtube you probably have an idea of what’s involved. We worked in pairs building up a series of moves and learning how to apply them singly and in groups.
Alun struck me (no pun intended) as a methodical teacher with the techniques similar to learning phrases in a foreign language. Once you’ve learnt a few phrases you can start to mix them up and find your own “voice.” It’s not a great analogy but it’s the best way I can describe it.
We spent three hours covering various techniques and then we had a chance to get up and demonstrate what we had learnt with Alun coaching from the sidelines if necessary. Once we had had a go, the seniors also demo’d their stuff but at a much faster, aggressive pace.
For the final hour, Carl Grant taught basic footwork patterns as an introduction to learning some strategies for coping with more than one attacker. I’ve never found this easy but the material was broken down into very simple steps and we ended the day working on moving around two partners and developing awareness, peripheral vision etc.
The four hours seemed to go too quickly which is always a good sign. Afterwards we stopped for a quick drink down the road before everyone went their separate ways.
My impressions of the style (admittedly after only 4 hours exposure) are that it emphasises footwork and positioning followed up with a series of rapid strikes to vital areas at close range, sometimes holding onto the opponent so you can clobber them without having to chase them around the place. The kind of strikes covered were open hand, elbow and hammerfist. There was minimal kicking and it was all low-line to the knees.
I found the style to be practical and relatively simple to learn and assimilate and would recommend anyone who is curious about it to take a look.
Cheers again to Alun and his fellow instructors for coming down and giving us a great training session. I look forward to the next seminar.
