We have often discussed it, but why is training with a partner so important?

This is not a typical martial arts based question but is a question based around day to day life.

Firstly a bit of background - As you will know the UK economy is a difficult place in which to work these days and in particular industries such as construction, manufacturing face difficult times. I work in construction where redundancies, pay cuts and insolvencies are common. My particular section of the industry, project management and surveying, is not immune to this.

I have been thinking about the street effective grappling seminar that Matt Evans gave at FFMA recently which was awsome. It is so good to have martial artists like Matt to come along and show us wee students their experience and expertise.

It had many of the movements of BJJ but Matt adapted them for street effectiveness, is there such a significant difference between sport applied BJJ and street effective grappling or is it down to the individual ability and experience to ...

Hi Tony.

I have been doing some training this morning just drilling with focus mitts and striking shields, and I noticed that when using an elbow strike for example the strike shield was not sturdy enough to absorb the impact, and at about 10 to 15 % power my strikes were penetrating all the way through the pad.

I notice Peter Consterdine and a few other instructors using what peter calls an etha-foam pad which is made up for his striking and absorbs a lot more impact than a regular ...

Hi Tony,

Hope you don't mind but this is a question for both you and Al (and everybody else too).

The simple question is:

Is there such a thing as an ideal fighting weight?

To expand on this should you tailor the way you move to your existing shape or should you target an ideal weight at the outset and then train for it? Does it depend on whether your strengths are stand up or ground work?

One of the major reasons behind my initial decision to train was for fitness. ...

Hi Tony and all,

The question I have centres on how to relax. I currently find it difficult to 'flow' through the moves and let the mechanics of my body do the work.

I am concious that when drilling a combination I tend to try to generate all of the power in a punch through my shoulders and end up very tired very quickly. In a similar vein to Esther's question rather than looking for the trigger for aggression I am looking for a trigger to relax.

All the best,

It struck home even moreso recently as I realised, on the train of all places, that when I train there are upto 20 other padholders in the room who want ...

Hi Tony,

How are you?

I was wondering if there are a lot of analgies between engineering and martial arts?

Sometimes I have the impression that martial arts is more reverse engineering as many people have a solution (technique) and will try to fit the problem to the solution. In engineering you have a problem and work from that to develop a solution and tools to solve it.

What are your views upon this?

Kind Regards,

Hi Tony,

Im in a small dilemma, and im hoping you can help.Basically its as the title says.As you know im a beginner and would like to progress. Now i have more understanding about mma than i did, im picking up on a few things about myself.

If i stand back and watch some of the higher grades in the class, i realise that they dont appear to be just training, they appear to be full on sparring, with out the actual intention of hurting, unless by mistake.Almost as if mentally their life ...

Teaching Tips

Tony,

When training outside of the club with some guys I can spot small mistakes that are being made to guards/stance etc. Still being a complete novice myself i struggle to find ways in helping them raise their game, I know how it should look, feel but cant think of a way to get the information over to them.

Training outside of normal class helps me massively and i would like to be able to pass over what little experience i have to others.

Thank you for all of your help and guidance ...

Hey Tony,

Hope your keeping well mate.

I know a lot of people who train in self defence, or the arts who when they get tired, their technique no matter what it is, tends to then fall into the Inacurate category and they just throw techniques for the sake of throwing them and lose motivation.

I know you have covered motivation, and I know where I stand on being tired and training. I still train every shot and technique like it is the only chance I will get. and knowing that if I ...

Hi Tony,

My question cuts to the heart of all of my training - motivation. My life has become very busy since the start of 2008, with work, seminars, courses, qualifications earned and travelling all taking more of my time. I have found that at some points I have had to cut back on training as there are only 168 hours in a week and I have to sleep for some of them! I know that you are a very hard-working and high-achieving person, so can you please share your opinions on how you motivate ...

I hope your well, i can remember you saying something on Geoff's first masterclass about stretching in the morning and why its more beneficial. When you have time could you elaborate on this.
