Hi Tony,
Last Saturday you were one of the instructors at the forum's seminar. I couldn't attend unfortunately as I would have loved to see you guys again.
Can you tell me what went on on the seminar? Any idea if there will be a full review?
Kind Regards,
Nick Engelen

Re: Self defense forum seminar
Nick,
It was a great day and it would have been nice to see you there.
The instructors all worked together supporting each other with all the attendees working hard and being very attentive to what was been taught on the day. It was one of those special days when you get a real community spirit feeling with no politics but a lot of fun and camaraderie. It was a top class line up in terms of instructors, which were the following (each teaching something different):
• Bob Spour
• Alan Peasland
• Lee Morrison
• Caarl Lewis
• Peter Skillen
• Eddie Quinn
• Mick Tully
• And myself and Alan Macdonald
All attendees were very attentive all day and some were actually very high caliber martial artists. For me and Alan it was real pleasure as this in only our third ever seminar.
Alan Peasland seamlessly ran the whole event in a real professional and relaxed manner – amazing when you consider he is still only 34 years old. Alan is coordinating the production of a DVD which Kaarl filmed all day – and Jamie Clubb is going to do a write up of the whole day. In fact Jamie actually choked out one of our senior students Tim Coppin during Mick Tullys’ session.
Personally I got to meet some really nice people on the day and I got to see the above class act line up of instructors teaching – so I am well pleased.
Good luck with your training

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the reply. Sounds good.
Can you discuss in short what each instructor was teaching?
I look forward to the DVD and Jamie's write-up. So Tim "the demolition man" Coppin was choked out? Unbelievable
Pleased to hear the seminar circuit is working out well for you.
Seeya and take care,
Nick Engelen

Re: Self defense forum seminar
Hi Nick,
It is difficult to do justice to what these top class instructors taught in the few lines I can put into this forum reply. Jamie Clubb is doing a detailed write up, so here is just a very brief summary to prepare you for Jamie’s article:
• Bob Spour: Awareness, avoidance and preparation for self protection – and various elements of NLP
• Alan Peasland – the fence/one punch-one strike training and motivational speaking
• Lee Morrison – close quarter self protection – preemptive striking – and blitz attack training
• Caarl Lewis – chokes, strangles, positioning and movement to achieve both
• Peter Skillen – stand up striking kickboxing based full impact
• Eddie Quinn – the approach: very unique using Silat moves to close distance and finish your opponent
• Mick Tully – ground fighting for the street BJJ based
• And myself and Alan Macdonald – we concentrated on fitness, fluid movement for striking, we also used rice pads to show how to condition your hands and increase your power, and I did some motivational speaking based on well being – Alan also gave some advice on correct pad holding -
The DVD and other written articles will give you the complete picture - and I understand from Alan Peasland that this may be the first of many -
Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony,
Thank you.
Your ricepads sounds intresting. Can you explain a bit more about it?
I remember your talks on well being from Geoff's course. You mentioned an African tea that is good for the joints. Which one was it? Any idea if it's available in Europe?
Kind Regards,
Nick Engelen

Re: Self defense forum seminar
Hi Nick,
Take a bag of rice from a supermarket about 8” x 10” by 4” inches and put it in 2 x plastic bags then wrap it all up with a whole roll of duck tape. You then use this to develop your palm heel, ridge hand and punching striking power. You can put it on the floor, kneel down and drive palm heel strikes into it – use all your weight breath out and transfer the mass of your entire body to the bag of rice as you strike – you can also put it flat on a 3ft wall and strike it – and your partner can put it against their stomach and you can practice full impact gut shots – the rice bag I find is better than focus pads as it reacts closer to like the muscles on the human body when you impact it – I have doubled students palm heel strike power in one session using the rice bag and certain drills – you can use bigger rice bags as I also do that -
The South African tea is called Rooibos - it is really good for you and without doubt one of the purest teas's made - if you type it into google you will find European suppliers

Re: Self defense forum seminar
The rice pads were good fun, I'm getting some tape lunchtime to finish mine off.
Rooibos is available now in quite a few UK supermarkets i believe, so may not be too hard to find Nick.

Hi Tony,
Thank you for the explanation.
Can you describe some drills on here? The ones that double impact sounds great.
Maybe you should write an article complete with pictures.
Kind Regards,
Nick Engelen

Re: Self defense forum seminar
Hi Nick,
You can do many things with a rice pad here are just a few (and you will see some of these on the SDF seminar DVD that Alan and Kaarl are currently producing which is nearly done):
• Put the rice bag on the floor; sit on your knees and do any of the following strikes in sets of 4 or 6 or 8etc.: palm heel; ridge hand; fist; ippon ken (karate strike with centre finger knuckle striking out and locked) etc
• You can also hang against a wall with cloth straps and use it as a version of makawari board
• You can have a partner hold it next to their stomach and slam in power gut shots which conditions your hands and your partners gut
• You can have your partner hold the pad next to their ribs and you can slam in circle knees which conditions your knees and your partners gut/rib cage
• You can have your partner hold the pad on their leg and you can slam in Thai style leg kicks which conditions your shins and your partners thighs
• You can have your partner hold the pad next to their gut and you can slam in Thai style roundhouse kicks which conditions your shins and your partners gut/rib cage
Basically you can anything by simply making the rice pad bigger or smaller depending on what it is you want to achieve – I remember on one occasion I bought a 20kg bag of rice ready packed in a heavy cloth sack which I covered with many rolls of duck tape and Alan Macdonald and I did a full session of heavy kicking to it in sets of 30 kicks each as holding the bag was a work out in itself. Also it is good fun to slam punches and kicks into a rice pad when your partner is holding it as there is some ownership of pain in conditioning drills - and having fun to me is a big part of training.
Basically Nick use your imagination mate and you can do many things with a simple rice bag (which includes making a good curry once you bust the bag after many hours of training)
