Kino Mutai
With the rise of many different types of virus throughout the world,is the filipino art of Kino Mutai still viable in today's society? maybe Mick Tully who is a seasoned JKD/Kali practitioner could share his viewpoints on this 'lost' art.

I'd bite anyone in a heart beat if i was in danger and it would bring me back to safety.

Re: Kino Mutai
According to Pat O Malley the art of Kino Mutai never existed but was a money making idea of Paul Vunaks, but vunak states it was passed down to only a handful of people from Dan Inosanto. As Mick is well established in JKD circles has he ever be taught/exposed to this art?

Re: Kino Mutai
Hi Guys,
I don't know anything about a money making thing, but that allegation came out
When Paul first brought out the PMA video series in the '80s and then again in The Enigma series...its always been my understanding from a MKG kali point of view, that kina mutai is one of the 12 areas of study in kali. I think because of the public conception of it being a biting art people lable it as just biting and therefore ask 'wheres the study?' Rick Faye explained it to me as the 'dirty tricks' section of kali whhich incorporates not only biting but nipping, pinching, horse bites, subterfuge, artiface and all other aspects considered dishonorable in some arts but imho totally necessary to win in some situations. I myself find this area fascinating and believe some of it quite archaic but all valid in real combat.....I'm in total agreement with peter re; biting......if my family were threatened I would not hesitate to bite someones throat out.....having said that, with my underbite it would resemble more of a dribbling attack! Hahaha. The best person in the UK to speak to re; Paul is Michael Wright on this very forum.....or for anything Fma/JKD as I rate him as one of the best in the UK....and that's across the board as a martial artist......hope this has helped you Mark

Re: Kino Mutai
i was shown it by Carl Lewis, what i found interesting was when you bite you grip them with your hands so they try to pull away, when you let go of the grip you quickly get space as the assailent pulls away, also while biting you keep chomping a bit like a shark, theres nothing like the feeling of being eaten alive, but i was only taught from a situation were it was the only thing available and to make space heres clip, but most of the stuff i was taught was on the ground, notice how he grips on to the person first before biting

Nice clip and good use of the bite. I once bit the end of a persons nose off in a club fight..Nasty situation but it worked and like you say carl created loads of space....(Especially between his eyes)

OK for you lads that have teeth, visions of assailant running like hell with my choppers stuck in his ear while I am trying to suck assailant no 2 to death with me gums
To put it straight anything that gets you one up on assailant must be good.

Re: Kino Mutai
Kina Mutai is a subset of the empty hand portion of the Filipino Martial Arts. Late 1982 early 1983 Paul Vunak was working on the formation of Progressive Fighting Systems, in order to branch out and teach the street orientated method of JKD/Kali he was becoming notorious for at Guro Inosanto's Kali Academy. Guro Inosanto wanted to share this somewhat unknown area of the art with Paul as it would very much complement his approach.
Kina Mutai is the art of uninterrupted biting and gouging. It is a very specific method and needs to be studied and experienced to really understand it. It is often mis-represented as a bite or a gouge here or there and that’s not the case, such an approach can be easily countered by a good grappler. The goal of Kina Mutai is to instigate an attack to the sensitive areas of the body using natural sharp weapons that is so ferocious it defeats the opponent emotionally. It is, without question, to only be used for a life threatening situation. The damage you will apply to your opponent drops straight into GBH and Wounding With Intent.
There can be no question that, in its full flow, Kina Mutai can leave you will a mouthful of blood. This is a difficult subject in modern times, but I agree with the other posts made here that you have to do what is necessary in the moment to save your life or that of your loved ones. The chances of contracting a serious viral illness through intake of blood in the mouth is far less than that of an infection straight into the bloody supply via intravenous injection of drugs or via sexual transmission. Its all about percentage of risk vs the danger you face from a life threatening attack.
Paul Vunak has been responsible for bringing this area of training to the attention of the martial arts world. Has he made money from that? Yes. Does he deserve it? Well, Kina Mutai once saved my girlfriend’s life - as far as I am concerned that’s priceless.

Re: Kino Mutai
Good write up Michael. I, like Kaarl have studied this through Sifu Carl Lewis too and agree, such a vicious yet suprisingly precise and devastating area of kali should only be used when in mortal danger. I enjoyed studying it, I remember when Sifu Lewis introduced it to the class, one of the first things he said to summarize it was that it's the "art of uninterrupted biting and gouging". It's an odd feeling to be trying to stick to someone like a leach and attacking soft spots though! And yes, it really does hurt like F**k when your training partner "forgets" it's only training and not a live situation!
