Does anyone know what the laws of protecting your property are. Say I caught someone vandalizing my motorbike, can I physically stop them from doing this?

Obviously restraining them and using a citizens arrest is an option but pounding the bejesus out of them is risky. See Ricks sticky on self defense and the law, something in there may answer the question better even though it's quite a grey area subject.

It also depends on if the properly is outside, such as your bike,
or whether the person has now became an intruder and has made it inside.
and most of us posted on another thread so you can see where we stand on that issue.

It is personal preference also, the actions you are willing to take today will have consequences of some kind thereafter.

Restraining them is all well and good IF you can do, but should something happen during that restraint you face all sorts of crap.

each person has their own method of what they would do, call police, sort any damage through insurance, as its only a posession. ( admittedly one which has been worked hard for). go and leather the bejesus out of them, citizens arrest etc etc.

Ultimately if you know who has done it, call the authorities,

    I know where I stand.

It's so frustrating though, you work your b******s off and save for what you want, then these t*^&% come a long and think they have the right to damage it.

My last bike was stolen out of my back garden, they lifted it over the fence and out of next doors back gate.

Anyway, thanks to both Craig and ForestMunch for the advice, I will deffinately be having a look at Ricks sticky on the laws of self defence.

    Thanks again

Without checking the UK Laws segment, I'm pretty sure it's the same fantastic grey area that they give to Doormen. Reasonable and necessary force. Which means it doesn't matter what you do because if it goes to court, the jury of 12 will never agree with your level of reasonable anyway, because they were not there at the time and the majority have never been in a violet encounter in their lives.
Did I sound bitter there? Wink
