    Hi all
Just a brief note to say hello, and good luck with the new forum.
My name is John Burke. I teach Karate in Newton Abbot, Torquay, and Totnes in Devon. If any of the members of this forum are in the area, or on holiday, you are welcome to come and train as my guest. Although I teach "traditional arts" I believe that self defence IS the tradition, and favour that enigma that we call "the old ways" over modern sporting practice.
Yes, my people wear a gi (karate uniform), and it's because we find it useful for grabbing and throwing without getting t-shirts torn, etc.
Some local teachers insist that my class is more like ju-jutsu or kickboxing when they have only seen a fragment of what we do, so I like to smile.
I look forward to chat about all aspects of self defence and technique, and hope that members will bear with me when moves that are mentioned get the retort: "that's in a kata". Wink
yours in the spirit of sharing

Great to have you on board mate.

Actually, I am planning a weekend in Torquay very soon - so would be good to meet up.
