    walking away Empty walking away

    i quote from the papers.

"Boris Johnson urged people to walk away if they see a crime committed rather than risk their own lives.

The London mayor admitted he would tell his own children to "look after themselves" rather than play Good Samaritan to a victim."

i have been in this situation 5 times in my life and have intervened each time, i was always aware of what was going, i always assume that an attacker could be armed or have friends close by. each time worked out ok.

i think even if you run to a phone box and call the police it is doing something. not everybody is confident enough to fight off a few guys. as soon as we say just walk away or turn the other cheek then we have lost a huge battle against the scum out there.

i think it is disgusting that the mayor of London said this...

    your thoughts?

I agree mate - but I guess we need to see the whole statement - you know what papers are like sometimes to take a snippet of a statement and use it to their advantage.

It's fine to suggest people walk away providing they do something like call the Police, etc.

However, I think it's a worrying state of affairs if we are suggesting people should walk away and simply not help another member of society who could be in a life threatening situation.

I too have helped others on several occasions as a member of the public and obviously spent most of my 7 years on the door helping out a whole load of people.

I wouldn't judge anyone for walking away - not everyone has the ability to help by intervening but as human beings we should at least do the "right" thing and inform the authorities.

But maybe Mr Johnson did say this - and it's just not been quoted

On another note - I think he's hilariously looney and funny :-)

    hey guys,
I'm totally with you on the subject of getting involved
but after hearing Brooke Kinsella on tv earlier i wondered
how many of the bystanders in the tragic stabbing of her
brother were equipped to get involved.....things are going bad people,
it's time we as a society made a stand.Everyday i see gangs of feral children up to no good loitering about....maybe i'm getting old but national service is now starting to sound like a good thing!
One thing i am sure of is though....carrying a concealed weapon, whether with intent or not should carry a mandatory 10 year sentence!
time to deter these individuals....appeasement does not work!
sorry if i'm ranting, but this great society of ours is worth fighting for!

i think were all on the same page guys, and your not getting old Mick just OLD School like me. that still holds a lot of values.

i dont expect anybody to go in and help fist and shit ablazing but i do expect everybody to do something even if it is calling the police. turning the other cheek or closing the curtains is admitting defeat.

society has changed big time, i do blame lazy parenting and the ties put on teachers for discipline. i was a little faker when i was young but we never hurt anyone or vandalised anything, ( sorry going off on a tangent).

people dont help because they are scared, they do not even believe they will remain anonymous, people need the confidence of a community support system. but it aint gonna happen overnight.

    Les, Al, Mick

Not a lot I can add to that apart from the fact im with you guys, as id like to think most upstanding people are. but like les has rightly pointed out. people will not and do not get involved for fear of it not staying anonymous.

I have stepped in a few times over the past few years to pensioners aids of all people being taken on by chavs, hoodies, over zealous smartie eating prats, call them what you will. but I wont stand by and see someone out of their depth in that kind of situation.

I have been on the receiving end while 4 guys used me as a punch bag and through my guard I could see people crossing the road and not even calling the authorities. long story and not really going to go into it. But it scars long term, and not just physically.

Come on people do the right thing even if it is a phone call. its time we fought back for this country of ours.
