    http://myselfdefensesecrets.com/

    exert from page:

Picture yourself being completely comfortable walking through a dark alley-way after midnight ... and it would be just like sipping hot-chocolate at home.

Imagine standing face-to-face with a mean 200lbs. bully ... and you can't wait for him to make a move so you can physically teach him a lesson.

Think of going out to a bar or a club ... and getting free drinks from people who can't stop saying "sorry" for accidentally stepping on your foot.

Just imagine how invincible & confident you will feel ... when you know you can fight and defend yourself against any guy out there.

Think how great you will feel ... when you can look into the eyes of real danger ... and all you would do is smile ... because you know exactly what to do!

if this guys stats are correct, over 100 thousand people have learnt this bullshit. and are standing up and getting ****ed over by thugs who are probably still laughing at them whilst they lay in hospital.
this sort of thing really piss's me off.
i so wish we cold get our hands on some of these peoples mailing lists and tell everyone the truth about self protection.

    any other opinions?

What I accepted a long time ago, is that the world is full of morons. Unfortunately, a large percentage of them gravitate towards martial arts.

This website is charachteristic of martial arts marketing that I see day in day out, and I understand completely why it angers you.

The best thing to do, as opposed to worrying about people who spread a negative sphere of influence, is to spread your own positive sphere of influence. And you do mate, with a good instructor, a great community of martial artists around you - and a great forum!

Smart people will sooner or later find the good guys, and although its sad that they may have to learn very hard lessons along the way, as long as we are here to turn it around as best we can.

My firewall at work is blocking me from viewing this site - perhaps we all need a Martial Arts Moron firewall Laughing

But I can guess what this site is all about - there's lots of them out there. Teaching people to have the most outrageous false senses of security.

As Michael said, this forum and the guys and gals on here are spreading the right message (In my opinion).

    Nice one cheers

Good find, Rick. It's a great reality check to get hit with something as unreal as this in an area we're all passionate about.

I don't have the energy on a Friday night to go over the fallacies of this point by point as I'd like--not that I'd hit any chord that hasn't already been done, anyway. So just a couple of quick points:

*He claims 'I've Personally Taught To Over 56,471 Men & Women...' Staggering! I've been a professional secondary teacher for 21 years, and given the fact we spend less than a full year with many students, and even counting those whom I've 'taught' only peripherally, I wouldn't think it's been more than a thousand a year. That's not even half of what he claims and it's taken me over two decades of full time work.

*I'd just underline Al's point about the outrageous false sense of security offered--no, guaranteed. Probably everyone on this board is a pretty decent fighter if pushed into a corner, but how many of us walk through dark, deserted alleys at midnight in especially bad parts of town, hoping someone attacks us so we can 'teach them a lesson'? Mad

OK, Rick, admit it. You put this up as a lampoon, din'cha? It's really based on a cartoon character, like Batman or something, right? 'Cos no one over the age of 10 is going to buy into this silliness... are they? Razz

Does any of the older members of the forum remember 'Viking Combat' featured in 'Combat' magazine many years ago? What about Lejos Jakab in 1968 demonstrating how to kill someone with his nose in 'Karate & Oriental Arts Mag? He ran courses in it and everything! Even appeared in the National Press!

Me and a pal signed up for a correspondence course in 'Aicondo' in 1974 for a laugh. It was billed as an American Special Forces System. Brilliant!! You een got a black belt when you completed the course of lessons. Actually you got the Black Belt when you sent them more money!!

Viking Combat was Brian Dosset, it was practiced with dustbin lids as shields, full marks for innovation! Very Happy

Lakos Jakab had his club at Crystal Palace over the pub - I remember he taught Roger Moore for his James Bond role...

What about 'Kateda' the mysterious 'Tibetan' martial art that was marketed across Britian that had students striking steel plates... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kateda

Go you remember the lethal Count Dante the 'deadliest man alive'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_Dante

    GKR seems dull by comparison....

He was in my brothers class in school and even went out with my sister for a while! Gave himself the name 'The Reverend Nagaboshi...' He did well in South London, as did Jon Alexander of 'Za Zen' fame, both myself and Vic Charles started in one of his clubs.

Terry Dukes is dead now and Jon Alexander is living and teaching in Cornwall. http://www.orientalmartialarts.org/2.html

tony leung of copper tubing mantis? (sorry "steel wire")? he used to express some very offbeat theories in his column, one of his articles even had his own theory as to why bruce lee died, something about loosing chi because he wasn't breaking wind correctly.

the 70's were rife with charlatans, thanks to the 'kung fu' boom.. some were half decent others total shite

I remeber John (Count Dante)Heenan and Bill Aguar (sp?) his top guy after John was supposedly killed in a kung fu brawl

anyone remember Chee Soo.. I went to see his stuff at the Houldsworth Hall in Manchester in 1975 .. GOD what garbage

Because some people dont like sweat and pain (your two most trusted training partners) they will always look for the easy option, like iron pumpers who take the 'gear' and dont actually pump much iron

what can we do? well just keep saying it like it is...then its up to them

Having read all the threads this is in fact a serious matter as some people have got themselves killed in altercations they should never have gone into but did as a result of false confidence instilled in them by poorly qualified instructors. You said at one of your courses Bob "it is not good having confidence without competence" and what a powerful statement that is. Why is there not a UK governing body that provides accreditation for teaching self protection; most other industries have a governing body to protect the public so why not start one in the martial arts headed up by those elite few who have stamped the craft of self protection. Basically if there was such accreditation then the general public have the choice of going to accredited teachers or the non approved ACOS (a collection of shite) instructors.

    Tony,

i think it would be great if it were possible to have some form of accreditation but in reality i can't see how that could be possible when there is such a wide ranging variety of beliefs in the arena of martial arts/fighting/combatives/rbsd/whatever.

It was tried with the ill-fated Martial Arts Commission.. (Jim Elkin).. the in-fighting about who was genuine and who was fake was better than any soap opera on tv..

self-regulation, government regulation etc all will fail due to human egos and frailties
