    Introducing Myself Empty Introducing Myself

    Post by Saint-Soldier Mon Feb 09, 2009 9:49 pm

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself on this forum. I'm 25, from Coventry, Full-Time I.T. Contractor and follow the Sikh way of life, which requires one to aspire to be a saint-soldier, hence have a deep interest in MA/Self Defence.

I have done a bit of training in Shastar Vidiya (translates to Art of Weaponery), which is a Sikh Martial art originating from India. The art itself, is more accustomed to a battlefield situation, whereas swords, bow and arrows, daggers and maces are used.

However, now I feel the need to prepare myself for unarmed combat, especially Geoff Thompson's line of thinking. I have read most of Geoff's books and have watched some of his DVDs, amazing stuff, the guys a legend!

I want to start training to become a better person and to be able to defend myself and family. Also I feel training can make one a better person by letting all the stress out in the gym/dojo. In my experience in training, I have built a comfort zone, because I wear a turban and have a long beard I only tend to train in gyms where there are many Sikhs.

However, I want to get out of the comfort zone and train where I feel almost intimidated, due to the fear inside me of looking different. I want to break that feeling of fear of someone shouting out "oh shit whats that p**i doing here". I once walked into a Boxing club, some guy said "oh look its santa", made me feel like shit, everyone laughed. I had to spar there aswell, it was the first time I sparred in the ring, I got hammered by this traveller, felt good though!

Anyway, enough of me rambling, but I'm now looking to train in Self Defence/MMA. If anyone could recommend any places in Coventry then please PM me.

    BTW my names Gursh

    Hi Gursh,
as it happens, Al Peasland and Mick Tully have a sunday class down in cov. having trained there just a couple of weeks ago, i can highly recommend it. great bunch of guys there, and i know neither Al or mick will tolerate abuse of ANY kind in their class.

welcome on board by the way, should probs say that on an intro thread haha.

    Hi Gursh,
I have seen some Gatka before, though not sure how it relates to what you train. Very interesting, much of the tactics seem to be about the few against the many. Good 360 awareness stuff and fascinating weaponry.
The Sikh culture has always interested me especially the emphasis on the protector/warrior and the high moral development in the training. Looking forward to your insights and input.

    Hi Gursh

Yes, welcome to the forum mate.

As a fellow Coventrian - it's nice to have a few more of us on here Laughing

Our Sunday class is going from strength to strength. We have a great bunch of guys and gals at the class now - all of mixed abilities but all training extremely hard every week.
I for one look forward to my Sunday mornings with these people.

You're more than welcome to come along, as is anyone else on the forum.

For details on times and location - please pop along to my website where all the information on the class and much much more is available.

Cheers and welcome again to the forum. Wink

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, really appreciate it!

Special thanks to Mick & Alan for the offer to attend the Sunday CSP class. I will be attending this Sunday, can't wait to train with people of such a high calibre. Will I need to bring any equipment along? ie gloves, pads etc

Also cheers to Pete for the PM aswell, will definitely pop down to your gym when I get a chance.

Something tells me that joining this forum was definitely a step in the right direction. Well done to all the guys runnning this site, what a great idea and keep up the good work.
