    Hello all,

Ive beenthinkinga lot about this subject lately, presently we only teach 16 year olds and upwards and have been trawling the internet looking for childrens self defence courses.

Do any of you teach kids? and if so what do you teach?

In my kids self defence classes that i'll be starting shortly the main emphasis will be on awareness.
Starting from the very basic such as home address phone numbers of parents guardians emergency services etc, first aid, dangerous areas of play, railway, building sites and road safety. Safety in the home kitchen, tools and alike. I also will be teaching basic healthy eating. There are also many different games and drills for fitness that include making lots of noise and running fast.
I also recommend swimming lessons and visits to the police fire and ambulance station. In my opinion all these areas are critical to a child's safety although certain areas of fighting back against adult attackers are taught such as clawing, scratching, biting, gouging kicking and screaming the fighting in young children becomes secondary to good awareness health and fitness.
I also highly recommend Robert Higgs anti bullying seminars and books.

its a massive subject and a very important one.

one of my 'prime directives' is, make it fun but you will have to scare the crap out of them at some point to get the feelings across, its easier with your own child, it has to be gradual with a class.

something i have done in the past is make them read a story in the newspaper about Madalin Macann...it seems to hit home what can happen.

dont teach anything too technical, it wont sink in.

it has worked well so far
