Self Defence in poor area. Empty Self Defence in poor area.

Post by Harpreet Sat Apr 10, 2010 3:23 pm

    Hello

I am new to this forum and dont know much about self defence at all. I am not sure if this is the right place to post so very sorry if this has already been asked.

I live in a very rough part of london and have many times been discriminated and picked on by violent people because of my ethnicity. Because I work night shifts I sometimes have to walk home among many drunk people who are very violent. I get very worried for my safety as the people shout abuse at me and threaten me for my poor english.

I would like to know any self defence dvds, books or materials that could help me get confidence and strength. I am not very strong and not good in voilence sitiuations.

could anybody please help? i would be greatful Smile

    Thank you

    Harpreet

    Hello Harpreet

You have absolutely come to the right place. In my opinion, this is the best resource on the web for a friendly group of incredibly experienced guys in self protection. I have no doubt that Al, Mick, Peter, Mr Turton et al will chip in and offer you their wealth of advice.

They are far better than me at that, so I will leave the floor for them, I just wanted to say one thing. You seem like a nice, genuine guy and you are the kind of person I like to help in martial arts. I work in London during the week, if there is anything I can do to help drop me a line on here. I don't want anything in return.

    Take care

    Hi Harpreet

Welcome to the forum - pleasure to have you on board

Hopefully you'll be able to find something of use and of help on here
I'll do some digging and find you some useful posts

Feel free to ask away and we'll see what we can do to help.

By the way - Mr Wright is doing himself a very humble injustice there - he's more qualified than most of us - particularly as he spends alot of his time working in the very areas you are concerned about - London, tubes, etc

For me - the first place I would start is to gain more knowledge of the things that you are worried about. The under-confidence and fears you feel as a result of the hostile experiences you mention are most likely exaggerated by what you think will happen.
I do alot of work with corporate clients in London teaching them all of the "soft skills" of self defence - how to stay aware and alert. How to asses situations and potential threats. What to look out for and what to avoid.
Once you start to understand these things better, then you will start to become more confident.

Everyone talks about awareness but not many actually teach what you should be aware of. The biggest factor for me is making sure you keep a balance so you look for Good as well as Bad. You look for the safer places to walk and to travel as well as the areas to avoid or be more switched on when you are in them.
As you do this you will find you spot alot more good than bad.

Feel free to PM me on here or check out any of my articles - some I post on here - others are only on my website

And ask away - lots of great people who frequent this site are here to help

    Take care

    Al

Welcome, take up Michael's offer asap after all we often become what we surround ourselves with and Michael's wealth of knowledge will definitely put you on the right path. There are some fantastic books around and a wealth of material for free on you tube to watch and practice, If you want to post any of them here to ask if they are worth practicing I am sure the people here will help you with that. Also find your self a local boxing club I am sure there are a few in your area and they are often very cheap. Like I said surround yourself with what you want to become and sure enough it will happen.
You have taken the right step but be cautious, careful is better than brave.
    Take good care

Thank you for advice so far

I am very interested in this topic at the moment and find your responses very helpful.

You mentions boxing but is this the best thing to train in for self defence or would maybe a martial art be better.

    Thanks again

Read Geoff Thompson's "Watch My Back", "Bouncer" and "On the Door" Geoff's accounts of real life events and situations while working as a Bouncer. You will get a insight into what really works on the street and what doesn't. Also get a copy of Geoff's "Dead or Alive: The Complete Self-Protection Handbook" .

Boxing is the easiest effective sport to adapt to the street for physical confrontation. As for your self defence you should concentrate first on your soft skills IE: awareness and avoidance techniques.
