A sad story but highlights the potential dangers of punching

We all talk about Pre-Emptive Striking and it's place in personal security

The important message here is a "reality check" on how dangerous these techniques are and how they need to be used as a last resort when your own life depends on it.

A sad story - but lets hope we can all learn a little something from this..

Moments earlier, Veitch, 22, of Caunce Street, Blackpool, had told onlookers: "You might think I'm a short fat muppet but I've got a killer punch."

Ow... Talk about words coming back to haunt you...

Interesting story; it said that he was punched and fell to the ground. I'd be interested to know what actually killed him- the punch or the fall. There was a story a few years back where a guy was pushed on a tube in London, fell back and hit his head on a corner of the train and died. Another story where a smililar thing happened involved a guy who tried to break into his own house, well it was actually his old house and he had recently sold it to a friend who was a boxer. Anyway, the guy got pissed and his muscle memory took him back to the old house. When he couldn't get in through the front, he attempted to break in through the back door. The guy who now lived in the house surprised him with a right cross. The guy fell back and hit his head on the ground and it killed him. Head injuries are tricky, that's one of the reasons we do not advocate using headbuts as a primary weapon.

Its a very good point - what did the most damage, the punch or the hitting his head after the fall.

One of the things I always warn of when using pre-emptive strikes is that, once you're punch has connected, you don't usually have any other control over what happens to the person after that.
How they fall, where they fall, what they land on, etc

The other issue is, how much difference does it make in the eyes of the law if the fall was what actually resulted in their death as opposed to your punch.
Eitehr way, unless you can really justify throwing the punch in the first place, I reckonit wouldn't make much difference to the outcome.

All this does for me is remind me of the dangers of ending up in situations where you need to start throwing punches, head butts, etc.
And highlights just how much you need to be certain that you have no other option but to hit out, before you do so!

As for headbutts - i too am a fan, sometimes they are the perfect technique for the situation and proximity

And deja-vu,i had a freaky accident yesterday, and even though i had protection, still my head feels dizzy..
