More people out there are familiar with Geoff Thompson's 'Fence', they recognize it and have some understanding of a variation of it, but what do you do when your facing off a attacker using your Fence, but your attacker is also using the Fence on you.

Re: The Fence against a Fence
Then you have a stalemate and neither of you will get hurt
The point of using a Fence is that it's not meant to be as obvious as just standing with your arms out-stretched in front of you
It's far more subtle
Having said that, when you are faced with someone who does understand this kind of body language and pre-fight dialogue, then they will also know that you know the game as well
If you can see it in them, they can see it in you - so to speak
You'd be more likely then that the fight wouldn't ensue as you are both aware of the other's abilities.
Let's not forget that using a "Fence" is as much about not having to fight as helping you get the first strike in - so maybe this situation would simply allow you to make your escape....

I suppose it's a sort of check-mate when you and your attacker are using a Fence, a bit like boxers squaring each other up - each will know what signs to look for. But if it comes down to it, it's about who will go first and methods employed within such close proximity.

Yeah - at the end of the day, you're in a fight
Sometimes there's no other way around it, no other tips or tricks or magic pills, other than to get stuck in

Re: The Fence against a Fence
well said Al
I have come to realize that a lot of people use the fence even though they have had no training. It's a protective barrier so don't be surprised if you see somebody using it. If somebody is trying to show there non combative and calm things down you will find that they will go into some kind of fence.
What is not so common is the fence being used wile an untrained person is under direct threat and there adrenaline goes through the roof. I think GTs aim was to teach people to use the fence in all situations that occur.
