How i view the martial arts
I view the arts like a knife, now before i suffer ridicule let me elaborate a bit. The arts first and foremost are used to defend and attack (martial) when required so it becomes a tool to protect ourselves. We can reach a level where are skill base can become very scary as we strive to keep the knife sharp.
Once this level has been met we can then take this sharp knife and start to cut down branches and twine enabling us to provide shelter when needed to offer protection against the elements. But to do this we must keep the knife sharp hence we train a little more.
Now that we can defend ourselves and provide shelter we will need to eat. We can use this blade to hunt, preparing the meat when the prey has been caught. We can peel and chop vegetables ensuring we have a balanced and healthy diet this gives us the reserve to train alittle more.
Now this knife has given us the basics for survival in this harsh climate but as human beings we need a little more. So we start to experiment with this knife and discover that this knife can be used to paint with (pallet knife) this gives us the freedom for self expression. And as we grow older we find the inspiration to express ourselves from the time spent keeping are knife sharp so we train a little more but now with a different view.
From here the possibilities are endless

    We have become martial artist's

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will be straight i read something similar years ago and i added a few bits of my own. But i felt compelled to write it as it seems you can only get recognition in some circles today if all you can do is have a row. I did take up training purely for that reason but as time moves on and i slow down i asked myself why do i keep doing it. I know violent crime is on the up but hopefully i have learnt enough through life not to be there when it happens. Now im not dismissing the need for realistic practical training far from it. In fact everyone should embrace this at one stage. But i find im pushed by other impulses to train now not just the need for self protection. For me the key to self protection now is the reduction of my ego and not worrying about what people think.
And lastly i love the training in a geeky kind of way.
I have garbled on enough now thanks for reading
