CSP - Sunday Class Empty CSP - Sunday Class

    Post by jay2075 Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:58 am

While I don't doubt the pedigree of either Alan or 'Big Mick' (I have met you both before once or twice and I'm well versed in Alan's background with GT) but I have to ask - their are a number of Geoff Thompson's former students teaching his methodology, and I believe that each one brings something to the table in terms of actually adding something new (both Matty Evans and Jamie Clubb have brought BJJ into the mix amongst others).

So in short, what are Alan and Mick bringing to their class that will make them stand out from the crowd - what delights await the newbie to MMA? It can't be just Mick's comedy skills can it?

And considering you are both moderators on this site this is well intentioned - I'm not here to stir things up, I'm genuinely interested!

Good point Rick, I just thought it may have been an interesting discussion is all. I'm sure Alan and Mick have plenty to say about themselves...just wanted to learn more. I'm already training with Jamie Clubb, who is frankly, a revelation in terms of teaching and his overall knowledge of the fighting arts. Couple this with his impressive fighting style and the way he pushes everyone in his class to the absolute limit I'm keen to learn what I can from others in his peer group. I know that Mick has studied Thai and Kali extensively but I'm curious to know what else I could expect...if they don't respond that's fine, I'll try and make it for the first lesson.

    Hi Jay,

Thanks for your quesiton mate - happy to elaborate a little on what has already been said.

You are correct, there are a few of the original group of Geoff's students who now teach his/and their own stuff. These being

Matty Evans, Tony Sommers, Glen Smith, Myself and happy to say Justin Gray.
We are the original guys who trained extensively with Geoff and in the original Longford Karate Club way before even the Real Self Defence system and BCA was formed.
I was personally privelleged to be Geoff's number 1 training partner and instructor for many years, training twice a day almost every day with Geoff while we progressed through the variety of arts that have helped to form the Real Self Defence system we all teach now.

Mick Tully trained for even more years than I in a different club but with close ties to our own, and we'd often meet to train and spar and fight - which was how I got to meet Mick many years ago.

You are correct though, we all do bring something individual to the common system.
For example, Matty has become an absolutely amazing ground fighter having studied in many arts and trained with the absolute best there is. He has taken the ground fighting we all learned to many many levels above what we did back in the old Animal Days and you have made a great choice to train with him.
Tony Somers, has moved into more of the psychology of self defence with his counselling skills and NLP experience. (his physical is still first class though!!!!)
Glenn is our resident Boxing Guru, and whilst training in other arts to compliment his amazing boxing ability, has stayed with his main skill set and is one of the best boxing coaches around.

For me, I bring to the mix lots and lots of real experience.
I spent 7 years working the doors, running doors up to 5 nights per week.
I have followed, perhaps more closely than the other guys, Geoff's original path which was to take the system and use it for real.
Don't get me wrong - before anyone picks me up on this - Matty worked with me and on other doors for several years, and all the lads have done their fair share of "reality".

So for me, my specialism is working the Fence and 3 second fighting.
I love all the arts, particularly Boxing and the grappling arts, so the class will be covering alot of that also.
The reason I have brought out The Fence Concepts DVD as the first of many products is because this is where my primary skill set lies.

So the class is a way of passing this on and helping those attending to improve their primary self protection skills (Fence) and then their support system to back this up.

There will also be some physical CV training - fun and fitness Laughing

There will also be alot of Micks skills which is very JKD and Muay Thai based.

As Craig said, we are looking to run the class in 2 halves, unless one of us is away then the other will take the whole session.

I am also looking to bring guest instructors down and, as we will have alot of people who are already instructors in their own arts and systems, we will be looking to take as much from them as we can and make the class a general melting pot of good martial arts information.

I hope this waffle has answered a question or two of your own.

Best thing to do is pop along, you're more than welcome to come along and join in for the session.

I'll be posting directions and confirmation of times on this forum and other sites, facebook group, etc - later this week

    Many thanks

    AL cheers

OK...I got the answer I wanted alright - sounds excellent. I'm not the fittest guy on the block (though I'm getting better after Clubb Chimera sessions) so I'll see you at the first lesson, unless you are fully booked...

    Hi Jay

Always room for one more mate - you're more than welcome and if you're already training with Jamie - I'm sure your fitness will be fine.

The class is open to all, from complete beginners to senior instructors.
It may be that as the class grows I will split it into different sessions depending on abilities.

But ultimately, if we are talking about Self Protection, then it should be accessible to all anyway.

Hope to see you there - cheers mate
