Pets and training Empty Pets and training

Post by Abnett Tue Dec 16, 2008 2:56 pm

This may seem a bit of an odd thread but, those of you with pets, such as cats and dogs, i.e. pets that like to play. Do you use them in any form of "training"? I use my 14 week old kitten for speed and reaction training. Obviously the objective is not to get scratched or bitten. Similarly with my friends dog that has a habit of jumping up and trying to smack you in the not nice to be hit in region. If you cover your hands she'll try to maul you, so the objective obviously is to avoid the teeth. Just thought i'd ask out of curiosity, or is it me losing the plot?! I think it works as it's helped me to learn to read oponents quicker and learn the signs of when an attack is coming. Surprisingly the signs us humans give off aren't too dissimilar to that of our domestic pets i think.

    sorry - couldn't resist

Don't have any pets so not in a position to comment on this one mate

I guess the more dangerous the pet, the more "interesting" the training becomes cheers

I've got 3 dogs, a Border Terrier (little) a mongrel. (medium) and a Mastiff (f***** huge!) all give a different workout, the Mastiff is human size but much stronger and usually wins, but the Border Terrier rules the roost and jumps on the Mastiffs head (which in itself is bigger than his entire body!) and defeats him morally every time.

Previously I've always had german Shepherds and they spar really well, it's good training to sweep their back legs as they jump and spar nicely avoiding the teeth is good weapons defence training.

I don't have any pets but if I had a dog I would go running with it, I think that would be pretty cool.

Boxers .... yes someone gave me one in August - the previous owner had her in a little flat and couldn't cope and as I had one before she was givn to us. One year old female - biggest boxer I have ever seen. She has started a tunnel under the front door through the floorboards and she tore the trim out of our estate car and pulled the wires out amongst other things. We managed to rewire most of it but the electric boot lock doesn't work now. Still if you love boxers you put up with it. Wouldn't train with her though. I tried running with her - intevral sprints and in the middle of one of the sprints she decided it was time for a play fight and attacked - tripped over her and nearly broke my neck.

Pets and training Empty People with look like theirdogs

Mick I only met you once and haven't seen the boxer but I bet there is more than a passing resemblance. I wouldn't mind looking like mine and in fact I thought I did, but my wife says I look more like a pug which I don't think is a complement.

And they are completely crazy - this one reminds me of that film turner and hooch but they are full of the joy of life which is why I love them.

i don`t know about training with pets but legging it round the back garden trying to catch the daughters guinea pigs is good fun when they are on the loose, its not quite as impressive as rocky balboa trying to catch a rooster but it certainly cheers the neighbours up.
