Re: Children and the arts.....
Hello folks
As for teaching kids, I would always recommend the japanese arts due to the discipline and respect involved in the classes.
However, if Sky Blue is interested in a further option, one of the JKD instructors I know is based in Coventry, is very good and has a kids class.

Hope this helps.

Re: Children and the arts.....
Hi Skyblue
Personally I would agree with all the posts here, I come from a teaching background (as in primary school teaching, (past life)) and I have to say that I think that children who involve themselves in other activities outside school and the play station such as Judo, Boxing, Karate, JKD etc seem to have a much more open and active way of viewing their lives, which can only be an asset.
My own advice would be that, yes it must be fun, but it must also be educated in a way that the children know that some techniques they may learn are not completely appropriate for outside the training gym. What I am trying to say is, that yes I believe that doing such an art will help with confidence, concentration, social skills etc, but in the same token they must understand restrain and reasonable force – as do us adults .

Re: Children and the arts.....
Hey Guys! Just saw this one and thought i would give it a go.
I have been training in martial arts all my life (or at least from when i could walk) and think it was a great base for me! In face it gave me a huge amount of confidence in school! My only worry with young guys doing certain styles is the false sense of security they main gain from it!
Dont get me wrong. The traditional arts are beautiful and do teach discipline as well fitness (which is a high priority in new society) but it doesn't teach what it is really like to have a fight, whether it be on the playground or in the pub. Ther is nothing like the fear of someone offering you out! I think arts like Judo, Boxing and Tai are great core systems and all of them let you experience the adrenaline of actually having to defend yourslelf.
With regards to peoPle mis using martial arts, in my experience, it is almost always people who have little or no experience in the arts that are the most violent. These people do not need teaching and almost seems that violence is entwined in their whole lives! For them it is not about defense but about attack and being the top of the tree! It's the whole dominent alpha male from the animal world! I think this is mainly because within all martial arts we are taught to use our skills carefully and sometimes even told that to use what we are being taught outside in anything but a defensive manner is wrong! I think as long as the kids are with a good teacher with good morals and discipline the main overall message will be 'only use this if you have to'. The first port of call should be to walk away!
I hope this all makes sense!
All the best
Louis

Re: Children and the arts.....
My "Reality Training for Children" series of articles:
http://www.clubbchimera.com/?p=14
http://www.clubbchimera.com/?p=15
http://www.clubbchimera.com/?p=16
http://www.clubbchimera.com/?p=21
My opinion is that there are far better places to take a child to learn discipline, fitness and philosophy than a martial arts club. These elements in martial arts classes are by-products that often obscure what the intention is behind the training. My kids know why they are at my classes, they know what the lessons are about and they know how we go about them. They have a great time, all out activities are games of some description, but all the games have a clear purpose that is discussed afterwards.
