    Punching Power

Post by Saint-Soldier on Thu Feb 12, 2009 9:03 pm

    Hi guys,

Just needed a bit of advice on how to increase my punching power. I did a pad session with a mate last night and felt my punch was weaker than I would like it to be. Where does the power come from for punching and how can it be increased? Are there any specific excersises/drills to increase power, to build that knockout punch!

    Look at basic boxing mate.
Power is all in relaxting and kinetic linking.
The power comes from the feet upwards, and the power is generated through almost a wave of power from the balls of the feet through the legs up the torso and into the weapon of choice. Be it fist, slap, elbow etc. the method of deliver is not the major issue its relaxation.

try not to lock any limbs while in motion of the strike, if you do it is essentially where the power will be cut off IE if you tense at the hips, thats where that power which is flowing will ultimately stop at.

There should be a thread on here somewhere about power generation as I believe we have already covered it. For me it comes down to relaxtion in the strike as I Have already said. and driving your weight through the strike on impact. not on the surface. drive your bodyweight through the pads, bag or whatever appears to be your target.

please check this post as it may help some more.

    hi Saint-Soldier

if it goes physical then striking hard is a very important part of whats needed, and in my opinion it should be at the core of anybodys response, the key to real power generation is practice, practice and more practice, start slowly focus on power and the speed will come through familiarity and repetition a good heavy/hard bag will stop you making mistakes and guide you in the right direction, and help you to condition your knuckles it also forces good form dont waste your time on a soft bag,

try to stay as relaxed as you can, tensing up and using strength slows down the shot, focus your anger on the impact and blast it out on contact by using an explosive breath(short sharp and fast) this tenses up the core and produce's a faster more explosive strike

try to step in the direction your striking first, and remember to move your whole body in the direction that your hand is hitting, making sure your hand is the last thing to go(think of a discus thrower were they put their body in first)

throwing your head in the direction will move the body faster, especially with higher shots, Ive studied a lot of power hitters and theres a few that stand out to and have helped me to move forward in my power generation, Dennis Jones and Steve Morris and mike Tyson do a search on YouTube and study/mimic their movements

Just remember whatever advice you get its only you that can get you to that point that you want to be at and its all about practice

    cheers

    Hi Mate

Looks like everyone has said it for me

    Relaxation
Then, lots and lots and lots of repetition and hard work.

It's the ability to combine focused intent with total relaxation that is a juxtaposition everyone struggles with at first.

But if was easy - everyone would be punching hard.

With some slightly broader thinking however, once you have figured out the mechanism to marry intent with relaxation, you can apply that to everything you want to achieve. For me, learning to punch hard is merely the vehicle that I chose to use in order to learn this bigger lesson.

It also helped me knock people out when I was in that world too though Laughing

    Good luck with it

    Keep us posted mate

    Al cheers
